The time has come

Part of blogging successfully is knowing when to shut down a blog.  With just 7 posts over the last two months, I’ve known this day was coming for awhile.  With all the other projects I have going on right now, I simply don’t have enough time to dedicate to Blogging Blog.  I will be blogging regularly over the Green Llama however, and any blogging related posts I have will make their way there.

Will Blogging Blog ever be back?  Well, it’s not going anywhere, per se.  The archives will be here, and I think there’s some good stuff in there.  I won’t say that I’ll never post here again, because I don’t know what the future holds.  Hopefully one day I will, but for now, I’m going to let it rest.  Come visit me at the Green Llama when you have a chance.

  • Say it ain’t so! I wish I could have found the time to contribute more, but I totally understand why you’re doing it. Good luck with your other ventures and I’ll definitely check out Green Llama.

Hey, have you considered selling bloggingblog.net?

  • Yea Ray, unfortunately it’s time. I feel that affiliate marketing has a big place in my future, and if I don’t pursue it now, I’ll regret it later. There’s so much potential there, and rather than try to run a half-assed site here, I’d rather shut it down cleanly. I will still be active over at GL, so please drop in whenever you like. Sometimes the posts get a little vulgar over there, but there’s some good stuff too.

  • Leroy,

With a domain name list this, you should just open it up a little bit and allow for contributor level registrations. That way people who visit here, can just post themselves.

Blogs don’t shut down because the owner doesn’t visit anymore… well, unless they pull the plug. Which I am glad to read that you aren’t going to do that.

Seems like you have a few regulars here, why not open up the gates a little and turn the site into a WP MU site?

I can squeeze out a few posts here… as I am sure there will be a few others as well.

    See ya,
    Garry

  • Garry, that’s an interesting idea, and one I hadn’t thought of to this point. You’re contributor number one - do I have any other takers? If I get a couple people who are interested, then I’ll set up the accounts and we’ll have an interesting project going on.

If you’re interested, just drop a comment here and we’ll go from there.

  • Leroy,

Sorry to hear you are shutting down this blog. You had some really good posts. I will have to check you out your writing at Green Llama.

    All the best,
    George

  • George,
    Thanks for reading.

  • Oh come on now… how hard is it to post just one more article… LOL!!

One article per month will keep this blog alive… Post an article and forget about it for 30 days, check your stats and you will reconsider (and slap yourself) for even thinking about shutting the site down!

  • Garry, that might be worth a post just to discuss it. Really, is it worthwhile to keep a blog alive if it can only be posted to once a month or so?

  • I think so…

For the simple fact that there are people who, (a.) link back to high quality posts that have been written months ago. [An author doesn't yank books off the shelves when he/she decides not to write new books], (b.) The content is indexed in the search engines and people depend on reading what has been written.

Overall, it is one thing to decide NOT to write to a blog, but it is another thing to think that you have to shut down the site and remove 100’s of pages of great written content just because you decide you aren’t going to write anymore…

The longer I stay online, I witness more and more blog deaths and attend so many blog funerals. Today with the nominal amount of money needed to run a blog, there should be no reason to shut one down.

Take this site for example, even though Leroy hasn’t created any new posts here on this site, I would almost bet the farm that this month has been of the highest traffic months. Maybe not first or second highest… but its up there.

Continue to slap Adsense code up there (maybe replace it with Text Link Ads)….. heck the site is PR4 and predicted to be PR5…

There is money here… and I don’t think anyone would ever want to purposely cut down a money tree growing in the backyard! :)

  • I wouldn’t imagine actually taking the site down - it’s worth the few bucks a year in renewing the domain. I’m going to read over Ray’s next post and give it some thought - I’m intrigued is all I’ll say for now. Need some time to ponder.
