Tagging - The Basics
Everyone has heard of tagging. Some of you are already doing it. For those of you who aren’t yet “tagging fools”, read on.
What is Tagging?
Tagging is a way to organize information. If you use Gmail, then you’ve seen tagging. Google is sneaky, though, and calls tags “labels”. You can assign multiple labels to each email -you’re not limited to one. So if you have an email that contains animal jokes, you can label it “animals” and “jokes”, and find it either way. The same concept applies to blog posts - you can apply as many different tags to a post as you like.
How can tagging help me?
If you want to organize the posts on your blog, and you don’t find categories flexible enough, then you may want an internal tagging system. I prefer to use Technorati tags instead - my posts get more exposure to the public, and hopefully bring in some highly targeted traffic. When tagged properly, your posts are indexed with other posts with the same tag. It’s a great way to find posts on topics that interest you.
How do I get started with tagging?
There are a number of ways to start tagging. For a heavy duty internal tagging system, I’d suggest the very popular Ultimate Tag Warrior. It’s a very powerful Wordpress plugin that you can do quite a bit with.
If you want to go the other route and add Technorati tags to your posts, I suggest Bunny’s Technorati Tags. It’s extremely easy to use, without any fluff.
You can read more about Technorati on my post Technorati for Beginners.
