Seven reasons not to post
There are a ton of reasons to post to your blog, right? Well, there are also quite a few reasons not to post to your blog. Bloggers Buzz points out of some of his reasons - here’s my take.
1. Never post when you have nothing to say.
This is one of my big pet peeves. Don’t post just to put a mark on the board, or to say you accomplished something. If you have nothing interesting, useful, or important to say, don’t say anything. It is ok not to post, I promise. The world will not come to an end because you missed a day between your posts.
2. Never post out of spite.
Very important. Don’t get me wrong, if you have a personal blog which you don’t profit from in any way, feel free to be spiteful! But if you’re blogging professionally, or hope to earn an income from your blog, bite your tongue. It’s all petty anyway, and you’ll be sorry later.
3. Never post under the influence.
Common sense, right? No one wants to read your drunken rantings. Unless your blog is called “Drunken Rantings”, in which case it’s ok.
4. Never post something that you believe to be untrue or likely to be true.
I do agree with this one, though it’s hard to always be sure what you’re saying is true. But you should have a pretty good idea. You don’t want to turn into the National Enquirer of blogs.
5. Unless you have an exceptional reason, try to avoid posting on topics outside of your usual topics.
Mixed feelings. Yes, it is better to stay on topic, especially if your blog is a focused one. However, I think it’s ok to venture outside your comfort zone now and again - it gives your readers a little more insight on you, the blogger. I have a habit ( good or bad ) of going off-topic sometimes, and I’m not very inclined to stop. It’s fun.
6. Don’t post when its likely to offend people.
I’m going to strongly disagree here. Part of the beauty of free speech and blogging is that you can say whatever you want. Anything you say can be offensive to someone, if they want it to be. Most of what I say over at the Green Llama is offensive to a lot of people, I’m sure. But I don’t care. And neither should you.
7. Always proof read your work before you post it.
Good point. It’s important to give off a professional air, or at least pretend like you care about what you’re doing. Spelling mistakes reflect poorly on you - it shows that you don’t know any better, and more importantly, that you don’t care.
Overall this list is very good, and definately worth a bookmark. If you’re an aspiring blogger, I highly suggest you check it out, and take it to heart.
